Can ChatGPT Design a Hawaiian Shirt? 12 Prompts to Try
ChatGPT can plan a Hawaiian shirt: theme, crew name, slogan, pattern idea. Here are 12 prompts to copy, and the parts a chatbot still can’t do for you.

Short answer: partly. ChatGPT is good at the planning side of a Hawaiian shirt. It can pick a theme for the trip, name the crew, write a line short enough to read on a shirt and describe a pattern in words. It is much weaker at the part a printer needs, which is a clean, high-resolution file. Claude and Gemini are in the same position. Use the chatbot to get to a plan, then put your photo or logo into a real print preview.
Below are 12 prompts we would use ourselves, grouped by the job they do. Replace the parts in [brackets] with your own details. They work the same way in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini.
What can an AI chatbot do for a Hawaiian shirt?
Some jobs suit a chatbot and some don’t. This is roughly where the line sits today.
| Job | How well AI does it | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|
| Pick a theme for an event | Well | Tell it the event, the group and the season |
| Name a crew or a trip | Well | Ask for short names and read them out loud |
| Write a slogan | Well, if you keep it short | Cap it at six words |
| Describe a pattern | Fairly well | Use the description to choose from finished designs |
| Draw a print-ready pattern | Poorly | Start from a real shirt design |
| Draw a logo | As a rough draft | Have it cleaned up or redrawn before printing |
| Show your own face on the shirt | Not at all | Use a live preview with your photo |
Prompts for choosing a theme
1. Match the theme to the event
I'm planning Hawaiian shirts for [event, e.g. a 40th birthday in Key West]. There are [number] of us, ages [range]. Suggest 5 themes that fit, one sentence each, and tell me which one still works if everyone's face is on the print.
Ask about faces early. A very busy pattern can swallow a small face, so it is worth knowing before you fall for a print.
2. Pick colors that photograph well
Suggest 4 color combinations for Hawaiian shirts at [event] outdoors in [month]. For each, name 3 colors and say how they will look in group photos in bright sun.
3. Match without looking like a uniform
We want [number] matching Hawaiian shirts, but we still want to tell people apart in photos. Give me 4 ways to vary one design across the group.
The simplest variations are a different face on each shirt, or a camp collar for some people and a point collar for the rest. Both are options on every shirt we sell.
Prompts for crew names and slogans
4. Name the crew
Suggest 15 names for our group for [trip or event]. Three words or fewer, easy to read from across a room, no brand names and no song lyrics.
The last line matters. Lyrics and brand names belong to someone else, and a print shop can refuse them.
5. Write slogans that fit
Write 10 short slogans for [event]. Under six words each, and clean enough for [the office / Grandma / a school event].
6. Turn an inside joke into a line
Here's an inside joke from our group: [joke]. Give me 5 versions that fit on a shirt, each under 30 characters, that still make sense to the people who were there.
Prompts for describing a pattern
7. Describe the print in plain words
Describe an all-over Hawaiian shirt pattern for [theme] in plain words: background color, main motif, smaller motifs, how dense it is, and what to avoid so a face on the print stays easy to see.
8. Borrow a decade
I want a Hawaiian shirt that feels like [the 1950s / a 1980s cruise / a tiki bar]. List the motifs, colors and fabric look I should search for.
Treat the answer as a shopping list. If it comes back with “dark background, big hibiscus,” that shirt already exists as Midnight Hibiscus Paradise.
9. Compare your options
Here are three shirt designs I'm deciding between: [names or short descriptions]. Which one will be easiest to read in a phone photo taken from three meters away, and why?
Prompts for a simple logo
10. Write a logo brief
Write a design brief for a simple logo for [team, company or trip]. Flat shapes, 2 or 3 colors, readable at 5 cm wide, transparent background, no fine text.
11. Simplify a logo for fabric
Here's our logo: [describe it or attach the image]. How would you simplify it for printing on a patterned shirt? Point out anything that will be too thin or too small at 5 cm wide.
Small type causes most of the trouble. As our bulk orders page puts it, text under a few millimeters becomes unreadable once it is printed across fabric.
A prompt for picking the shirt
12. Let the chatbot choose from real designs
Here are the Hawaiian shirt designs I can choose from: [paste design names]. Pick one for each person below and explain in one sentence: [name and one detail about each person].
Paste names from our shop and every answer points to a shirt you can open. Our own picks, for comparison: a bachelor party in Vegas gets Casino Jackpot, and a dad who owns three grills gets Grill Master. See whether the chatbot agrees.
How do you turn the answer into a real shirt?
- Choose a design in the shop, or start from a collection such as funny Hawaiian shirts.
- Upload a photo or a logo on the design page. Background removal is automatic and free.
- Check the preview at normal size and up close before you pay.
- Pick sizes with the size guide. Men’s sizes run from S to 6XL.
- Ordering for a group? From eleven shirts the price steps down automatically. The bulk orders page has the details.
What should you watch out for?
- Text inside AI images. Image generators still misspell words. Check every letter, or leave text out of the image and add it later as real type.
- Resolution. A logo prints best from a vector file (SVG, PDF, AI or EPS). The next best thing is a PNG with a transparent background, at least 1,500 pixels on the long side.
- Ownership. In January 2025 the U.S. Copyright Office concluded that prompts alone don’t give enough control to make you the author of an AI-generated image. Parts you draw or change yourself can still be protected. The Copyright Office’s AI reports go into detail if it matters for your business.
- Other people’s work. Skip prompts that copy a brand, a cartoon character or a famous face. Your own photos and your own logo are the safe choice.
Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT make a print-ready Hawaiian shirt file?
Not reliably. Image tools produce files that look fine on a screen but are often too small or too soft for an all-over print, and a repeating pattern can show seams where the tiles meet. Start from a finished shirt design and add your photo or logo to it.
Do these prompts work in Claude and Gemini?
Yes. They are plain instructions, so any chatbot can follow them. The answers will differ from tool to tool, which is part of the fun.
Can I print an AI-made logo on a shirt?
Yes, if the file is clean and you have the right to use it. Upload it on the design page and check the preview. For a larger order, send the file with the bulk quote form and you get a digital proof of the logo in the pattern before anything is printed.
Can AI put my face on a Hawaiian shirt?
A chatbot can’t show you your own face on a real print. Our preview can: upload one clear photo, the background is removed, and the face goes into the design you picked.
Key takeaway
Let ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini do the talking: themes, names, slogans and a logo brief. Leave the printing to a finished design and a real preview. Start with prompt 1, then upload a photo and see how it looks.
