To wear a Hawaiian shirt well, get the fit right, leave it untucked unless the setting is dressy, and keep everything else plain so the print does the talking. The shoulder seam should sit on your shoulder, the body should hang loose without billowing, and the hem should land around your hips. Pair it with solid chinos, shorts or jeans and simple shoes.

Here’s the short version:

  • Fit: measure a shirt you already like and match it to a chart. Ours runs from 20.5 in across the chest on S to 35.5 in on 6XL, measured flat.
  • Length: untucked, the hem should cover your belt and stop around the hips. Our lengths run from 29 in on S to 37 in on 6XL.
  • Tuck: leave it out by default, since the straight hem is cut for that. Tuck it into trousers for the office or a dinner.
  • Bottoms: one print per outfit. Khaki, stone, navy or olive chinos, dark jeans or linen pants.
  • Shoes: leather sandals, loafers, boat shoes or clean low sneakers.
  • Photo prints: try your face or logo on a dark and a light ground in the free preview before you pay. One shirt is $39.90.
Setting Tucked or untucked Bottoms Shoes Layer
Beach or vacation day Untucked, often open Tailored shorts Leather sandals Plain white or gray tee underneath
Backyard party or cookout Untucked Chino shorts or dark jeans Clean sneakers None
Office Friday Untucked if short, tucked if long Chinos or dark jeans Loafers Light cardigan if the AC runs cold
Dinner or “aloha attire” wedding Either, neatly Linen trousers or pressed chinos Loafers Unstructured blazer, optional
Fall evening Untucked Dark jeans Suede boots Denim or bomber jacket

How should a Hawaiian shirt fit?

A Hawaiian shirt should fit loose through the body and correct at the shoulders. The shoulder seam lands on the edge of your shoulder, the buttons lie flat without pulling, and the hem ends around your hips when it hangs out. The surest way to get there is to measure a shirt you already like instead of guessing from a letter size.

Camp shirts are cut boxier than dress shirts, so some extra room is normal. Too much room shows when you sit: the fabric balloons and the sleeves creep toward your elbows. Lay your favorite short-sleeve shirt flat, measure across the chest from armpit to armpit, then measure from the top of the shoulder beside the collar down to the hem. Compare both numbers with the chart in our size guide.

Size Chest, flat (in) Chest around, doubled (in) Length (in) Shoulder (in)
S 20.5 41 29 17
M 22.5 45 30 18
L 24.5 49 31 20
XL 26.5 53 32 21
2XL 28.5 57 33 22
3XL 30.5 61 35 24
4XL 32.5 65 36 26
5XL 34 68 36 26
6XL 35.5 71 37 27

Each shirt is measured by hand, so allow about 1 in either way. Every size from S to 6XL costs the same. There is no separate tall cut, because the shirt gets longer with each size. Bigger guys can see the full chart on our big and tall Hawaiian shirts page.

Worked example: XL or 2XL?

Say your favorite camp shirt measures 27 in across the chest and 32.5 in long. On the chart, XL is 26.5 in wide and 32 in long, and 2XL is 28.5 in wide and 33 in long. The XL is half an inch narrower than the shirt you like, and hand-measuring can stretch that to a full inch. The 2XL gives you 1.5 in more width laid flat, which is 3 in more around your body, and only half an inch more length. For a shirt you plan to wear untucked and loose, take the 2XL. If you tuck most of the time and like a trimmer look, the XL works.

Should you tuck in a Hawaiian shirt?

Usually no. The aloha shirt has a straight hem and is traditionally worn untucked, though tucking it into trousers is accepted, much like a polo shirt [1]. Wear it out for casual days and tuck it when you pair it with trousers and a belt for work or dinner.

History backs both habits. The untucked style may come from local Filipino workers who wore their shirttails out. In the 1950s, the shirt was allowed as business attire during Aloha Week only if it was tucked in [1]. A tucked aloha shirt still reads as the dressier version.

Situation Tuck it? Why
Shorts No A tucked shirt with shorts looks like a uniform
Jeans, casual No The straight hem is made to hang out
Trousers and a belt Optional Tucked looks sharper for work or dinner
Hem falls past your back pockets Yes, or size down A long hem worn out looks borrowed
Under a blazer Either Tucked is cleaner with high-waisted trousers

What if the shirt is too big?

Roll the sleeves once, wear it open over a plain tee, or tuck it into trousers. If the shoulder seam hangs well past your shoulder, none of that hides it, and the next shirt should be a size smaller.

What pants, shorts and jeans go with a Hawaiian shirt?

Solid bottoms go with a Hawaiian shirt: khaki, stone, navy or olive chinos, tailored shorts, dark or white jeans, and linen trousers in the heat. The shirt already carries the pattern, so keep the pants plain and pick a color that appears somewhere in the print. Printed shorts, plaid and cargo pockets fight with the shirt.

A Hawaiian shirt with jeans is the easiest mainland outfit. Dark denim calms a loud print, and white or light jeans brighten a summer evening. Linen pants and leather sandals come up again and again when men ask how to step up an aloha shirt outfit [5]. One thing to watch in resort towns: khakis with white sneakers is a common staff uniform, so olive or navy chinos set you apart.

Bottoms Best for Color tip Skip
Chino shorts Beach, cookouts, golf Navy, stone or olive Cargo shorts
Dark jeans Bars, dinners, fall Indigo goes with any print Ripped or baggy denim
White or light jeans Summer evenings Best with blue or green prints White jeans with a white-ground shirt
Chinos Office, events Pick a shade from the print Khaki plus white sneakers in resort towns
Linen trousers Hot weather, aloha attire Sand, white or navy Wrinkled linen at a formal dinner

Which shoes and layers work with a Hawaiian shirt?

Simple shoes and plain layers work best with a Hawaiian shirt: leather sandals, loafers, boat shoes or clean low sneakers, and a plain tee, cardigan or denim jacket when you need more. The shirt is the loud piece, so keep feet and layers quiet. Match the shoe to the setting, not the print.

Loafers and plain trousers carry the shirt from day into evening.
  • Leather sandals for the beach and warm days, boat shoes for a casual look, loafers for dinner and the office, clean white or tan sneakers for everything in between.
  • A plain white, gray or navy tee under an open shirt is the easiest layer, and it covers the print on a cold flight or evening.
  • A denim or bomber jacket goes over the shirt in fall, and a cardigan works when the office air conditioning runs cold. An open jacket shows only a strip of the print, which tones the shirt down for an evening out.
  • Keep accessories few. A plain watch and sunglasses are enough, and at a luau a lei is the one thing to add.

How do you wear a Hawaiian shirt to work or a dressy event?

In Hawaii, the aloha shirt is real business wear. “Aloha attire” on an invitation means something between formal wear and casual wear, close to business casual, and by 1970 aloha wear was accepted at work on any day of the week [1]. On the mainland, choose a darker or smaller print, wear long trousers and loafers, and tuck the shirt in if your office runs formal.

The habit has a long history. The Hawaiian Fashion Guild lobbied for “Aloha Friday” in 1965, it officially began in 1966, and the idea later spread to the mainland as Casual Friday [1]. By the 1960s, Aloha Fridays were a fixture of a certain kind of workplace [2]. If your company does Hawaiian Shirt Day, the table below keeps you inside the dress code. Teams that want a matching look can put the logo into the print with company Hawaiian shirts.

Dress level Print Bottoms Shoes Jacket
Casual office Any, small or medium motif Chinos or dark jeans Clean sneakers or loafers None
Business casual Dark ground, muted colors Chinos or trousers Loafers Optional cardigan
Aloha attire event Floral, traditional look Linen or dress trousers Loafers Not needed
Evening wedding guest Black or navy ground Tailored trousers Leather loafers Unstructured blazer

How do you wear a loud print without looking like a tourist?

A loud Hawaiian shirt looks deliberate when it is the only bold thing you wear. Keep the bottoms solid, the shoes simple and the fit close to your size, and pick a print whose main color you can repeat in the pants. A clean fit does more against the tourist look than a quieter pattern.

A dark ground and solid trousers read as deliberate, not touristy.

The worry is old. Smithsonian magazine traced the shirt from a 1930s celebrity favorite to “corny suburban-dad-wear” and then to a comeback led by high-end labels [2]. Locals in Hawaii once found the brightest prints too wild, and traditional men’s aloha shirts lean toward muted colors [1]. People who live on the islands still say it in style-video comments: a shirt with every color at once says visitor.

Two quick tests help. Stand back from a mirror and name the main color of the print; the rest of the outfit can follow it. Then check the pattern scale. Small motifs read as texture from across a room, and large ones read as a statement. Our Hawaiian shirts by color page groups prints by ground color if you want to start from pants you already own. A luau has its own rules, covered in our guide on what to wear to a luau.

How do you style a custom face or logo Hawaiian shirt?

A custom face or logo Hawaiian shirt is styled like any loud print, with one extra step. The photo adds a second focal point, so choose the ground color with your outfit in mind. Navy, black and dark green grounds show faces clearly and go with jeans. White grounds look fresh but show the cutout outline more, so check the edges in the preview.

On our design page, you upload a face, a pet or a logo and see it in the print before you pay. Background removal is automatic and free, and JPG, PNG and WebP files up to 8 MB work. Try the same photo on two grounds and picture the pants you will wear with each. A dark print like Dark Tropical Flowers is also more forgiving when the photo is a little small.

The construction helps the shirt look like a real shirt. Every shirt has a camp collar, and the optional chest pocket is free, with the print matched across it. The design is dye-sublimated into the polyester before the shirt is cut and sewn, so the print does not sit on top like a transfer. Is a Hawaiian shirt good for hot weather, and can you wear one in fall?

A Hawaiian shirt suits hot weather because it is short-sleeved, loose and worn untucked, which matches the federal heat advice to wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing [3]. In fall, it works as a layer under a jacket with dark jeans and boots.

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension adds detail for active days in the heat. Loose clothes let air reach your skin so sweat can evaporate, and darker colors absorb more heat. It lists quick-drying fabrics such as polyester as a good pick, and says cotton, silk and linen hold moisture [4]. That advice is written for exercise clothing, so treat it as a guide, not a test of any shirt. Many style guides favor rayon or cotton for drape. Our shirts are polyester, and a lighter ground is the better pick for a long day in the sun.

For cooler months, put a denim jacket, a bomber or a cardigan over the shirt and switch shorts for dark jeans. A darker print with fewer colors looks more at home in October than a bright pink flamingo.

Conclusion

Wearing a Hawaiian shirt comes down to a few habits. Size it by a shirt you already like, leave it untucked unless you wear trousers and a belt, and keep the bottoms and shoes plain so the print is the only loud piece. For the office, go darker and tuck it. For the beach, wear it open over a tee.

If your print carries a face, a pet or a logo, the same rules apply and the ground color matters a little more. Upload a photo in the live preview and compare a dark and a light ground before you pick one.

FAQs

Should a Hawaiian shirt be buttoned all the way up?

No. Leave the top button open so the camp collar lies flat. On the beach, many men wear the shirt fully open over a plain tee.

What do you wear under a Hawaiian shirt?

A plain white, gray or navy crew tee works when the shirt is open. When it is buttoned, choose a thin undershirt that does not show at the collar, or nothing at all in hot weather.

Can you wear a Hawaiian shirt to a wedding?

Yes, when the invitation says aloha attire or the wedding is on a beach. In Hawaii, aloha attire means aloha shirts for men at weddings and dinners [1]. For other weddings, choose a dark print, trousers and loafers, and ask the couple if unsure.

Are Hawaiian shirts still in style?

Yes. Smithsonian magazine described a comeback in 2020, with high-end labels reviving early print styles [2]. A good fit and plain bottoms keep the look current.

What size Hawaiian shirt should I buy?

Measure a shirt you like across the chest and from shoulder to hem, then match both numbers to the chart. Our men’s sizes run from S at 20.5 in across the chest to 6XL at 35.5 in, all at the same price.
